Exams

Exams, without the guesswork.

Homeschooled students sit GCSEs at an approved exam centre as private candidates. We help you find a centre, track each step and get your child ready. The centre makes the entries.

Five stages

An entry is only confirmed at stage five

We track each subject through these stages and tell you where it is.

  1. Centre found

We find an exam centre that may accept your child for the subjects.

  2. Centre agrees in writing

The centre confirms it will accept your child as a private candidate.

  3. Exam parts arranged

Papers, plus any speaking, practical or fieldwork parts, are arranged.

  4. Entry sent

The centre submits the entries to the exam board.

  5. Entry confirmed

The centre sends a statement of entry. Only then is it confirmed.

Who does what

Three parts. Clear jobs.

Legacy Academy

  • Advises on the right exam year and series
  • Helps you find and contact a centre
  • Tracks deadlines and the stages above
  • Prepares your child for exam conditions
  • Explains results and next steps

The exam centre

  • Decides whether to accept your child
  • Makes the entries and sets its own fees
  • Approves any access arrangements
  • Runs the exams on the day
  • Issues results and certificates

Your family

  • Agrees the plan and pays centre fees
  • Shares the details a centre asks for
  • Gets your child to the centre on time
  • Keeps your home education duties
  • Checks the statement of entry
Plan early. Exam centres often set their own deadlines, earlier than the exam boards. Some subjects also need speaking, practical or fieldwork parts arranged. We start these checks when we build the plan.

After the exams

Results and next steps

  • We explain the results with you and your child.
  • We help you understand any review options the centre offers, and its deadlines.
  • We check what the next college or sixth form asks for.
  • Certificates come from the exam centre.
