What we look for
The bar isn't a CV — it's whether your students would want you back.
Every parent who books with us is trusting their child's GCSE year to a tutor we picked. The bar we hire against is the bar we'd want for our own kid — mostly character (reliability, judgement, taking the responsibility seriously), with credentials proving you actually know the subject end to end.
- Subject mastery at GCSE level — across all major boards (AQA, Edexcel, OCR), not just the bits you found interesting at A-level.
- Prior teaching or a serious tutoring track record — paid 1-to-1 work, school placements, lead-tutor elsewhere. Hours, not just title.
- Willingness to be enhanced-DBS-checked before your first lesson with a real student. No exceptions — we cover the cost.
- Reliability a parent can plan around: same time each week, no 24-hour cancellations for a holiday booked yesterday.
- Teaching as a responsibility, not a side-hustle. We fit tutors who finish a lesson knowing what they'd do differently next week.
What we offer
A clean platform, a steady supply of students, and a route to grow.
We're not the highest-paying tutoring platform in the UK. We are the cleanest place a serious tutor can spend the part-time hours they have available — a steady supply of matched students, parents whose expectations have been set honestly before you meet them, and an ops team that does the matching, scheduling and admin so your hours go on teaching.
Pay is per delivered lesson, monthly in arrears, with cancellation protection inside our notice window. The exact per-hour range is being finalised by the founder — we quote the real figure at interview before you commit time to the trial lesson. We refuse to publish a placeholder (see TODO_FOUNDER_TUTOR_PAY.md).
- Pay per delivered lesson. Cancellation protection inside notice window. Exact rate confirmed at interview.
- Flexible scheduling — you set weekly availability, we match students into your slots. Most tutors run 4–12 hours/week.
- Clear boundaries: no "on-call" hours, no parent WhatsApps at 11pm — all contact routes through us.
- CPD support — exam-board updates, mark-scheme briefings, an internal teaching-notes library.
- Route to lead-tutor and curriculum-lead roles as we grow.
The process
Four steps. Four weeks, give or take. We don't ghost.
Step 1 — Written application. Use the Apply button on this page to send us the basics (name, subjects, region, contact details) plus a short paragraph on why you want to teach. We reply within five working days, including if it's a no.
Step 2 — 30-minute interview with the founder. A conversation about how you teach, the kind of student you work well with, and the rate band we'd offer you. We answer your questions about pay and hours honestly, including the parts still being figured out.
Step 3 — Trial lesson with a real prospective student. 30 or 60 minutes on a topic we send in advance, paid at the standard hourly rate. The parent watches the first few minutes, then leaves you to it. We collect honest parent feedback and your reflection.
Step 4 — Onboarding. Enhanced DBS verification (we cover the cost), a platform walkthrough, and we set your weekly availability. Your first regular slot is usually within a week of onboarding completing.
Subjects we're hiring for now
What's open as of this academic year.
The list below is conservative on purpose — we'd rather a candidate apply for a subject we can place them on than one we can't. The founder reviews this quarterly (see TODO_FOUNDER_HIRING_SUBJECTS.md); the "always hiring" subjects reflect parent-demand backlog we genuinely can't keep up with.
If your subject isn't listed, apply anyway — we keep a register of strong candidates and reach out the moment a slot opens, particularly if you teach two or more GCSE subjects.
- GCSE Mathematics — always hiring (highest parent demand).
- GCSE Combined Science — always hiring.
- GCSE Biology (separate science) — always hiring.
- GCSE Chemistry (separate science) — always hiring.
- GCSE Physics (separate science) — currently hiring; subject to founder confirmation.
- GCSE English Language and English Literature — currently hiring.
- Other GCSE subjects (Geography, History, MFL, Computer Science) — register of strong candidates only; we'll be in touch as demand catches up.
Apply
Five minutes. Three short steps. We reply within five working days.
Applications go straight to the founder's inbox, read inside a week. The form below asks for the bare minimum we need to triage — name, contact, what you teach, and a short paragraph if you'd like to add one. Send a CV by reply once you submit if useful — don't wait to write one.
