Why tutoring usually fails

Tutoring isn't working because it's not diagnosing.

Your child is trying hard — but the grades aren't moving.

Every tutor uses the same generic curriculum, regardless of your child's actual gaps.

By the time mocks reveal the problem, it's already June.

Here's how we do it differently.

About

Why I started Legacy.

I started Legacy Academy in 2020 because I'd watched too many students go through GCSEs being told they weren't trying hard enough — when the real problem was that nobody had ever properly looked at what they didn't know.

What started as me tutoring a handful of students in London has grown into a team of 30+ specialist tutors working with families across the UK. But the principle hasn't changed: understand the child first. Plan second. Teach third.

We don't hire tutors who are just clever. We hire tutors who are serious, principled, and who treat teaching as a responsibility — not a side hustle. Every tutor on our team has been interviewed by me personally.

The free trial is the front door. Thirty minutes with one of our tutors and you'll see exactly how we work — before you commit to anything.

Before you book

Questions parents ask before they book.

A 30-minute 1-to-1 session with a matched specialist tutor. Your child meets the tutor, works on a real piece of GCSE material, and you both see how we teach. No card needed, no commitment, no hard sell at the end.

Free rematch. If the chemistry isn't right, we'll pair your child with a different tutor at no cost. We'd rather take the time to find the right fit than push you into ongoing lessons with the wrong person.

Both available. Online uses a shared interactive whiteboard so your child can work problems through with the tutor in real time. In-person is offered subject to tutor availability in your area.

Maths, English Language, English Literature, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics — at GCSE level. All major exam boards: AQA, Edexcel, OCR, and WJEC/Eduqas.

An optional add-on for parents who want a deeper picture before committing to weekly lessons. It comes in two parts. First, a written diagnostic across the core GCSE subjects — Maths, English, Biology, Chemistry and Physics — showing your child's strengths and gaps topic by topic, the grade they're sitting at right now, and the grade they're realistically working at (often a grade or two apart). Second, a 60-minute 1-to-1 session with a specialist tutor focused on how your child learns: how quickly they absorb new information, which study techniques actually stick for them, and which revision styles tend to produce real retention vs. ones that just feel productive. You leave with a personalised plan, target grades, and a 30-minute call with our founder to walk you through it. You can book the free trial without it and add it later.

Within 24 hours of the lesson you'll get a short written summary from your tutor — what they covered, what your child handled well, and the specific gaps they spotted. From there it's entirely your call. If you want to start weekly tutoring, we'll lock in a recurring slot with the same tutor. If you'd rather think it over, there's no follow-up pressure — we don't chase, we don't upsell. You can also book the diagnostic at this point if you want a fuller picture before committing.

One 1-to-1 lesson per week with the same tutor in a fixed slot, online or in person. Each lesson is built around the gaps and goals identified in the trial (and diagnostic, if taken), not a generic syllabus crawl. You get a six-weekly written progress review from the tutor, 24/7 messaging access between lessons for stuck-on-a-question moments, and direct access to our founder if anything feels off. We work to grades, not hours — the goal is measurable progress every half-term.

Most students see a 1–2 grade jump within 3 months of consistent weekly lessons, provided they show up and do the work between sessions. Sustained progress comes from sustained effort — there's no magic.

Yes. No lock-in contracts. Pause or cancel weekly tutoring with one week's notice — that's it.

A mix of both — selected for character first, subject expertise second. All tutors are DBS-checked and personally interviewed by our founder before they ever meet a student.
